Observatory Hill
The shrine on top of this hill symbolically stands as
a witness of peace. This shrine of the Buddhists and
Hindus is perhaps the only one in the world where people
of two religions pray together.
Toy Train Ride
This small but sturdy steam engine train is as much
a part of Darjeeling as the tea gardens and Kanchenjunga.
Running on a narrow gauge track measuring a mere 2 feet,
the track running from the plains in Silliguri to Darjeeling,
is considered a marvel of engineering.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
This Institute was established in 1954 after the conquest
of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay
Sherpa after their conquest of Everest. It conducts
basic and advance courses on mountaineering skills.
The Everest museum has on display, many objects and
artifacts of the conquest of Everest as well as those
of earlier attempts.
Yiga Choling Monastery
Founded in 1875, this monastery sits atop a hillock
in Ghoom, 8 kilometers away from the town. It enshrines
15 images of the Maitreya Buddha or the coming Buddha.
Tiger Hill
Situated 11 kilometers away from the town, at 2585 meters,
Tiger Hill is synonymous with the sunrise over Kanchenjunga.
Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, can also
be seen from this point.
Tea Gardens
Planted in 1840 as an experiment, Darjeeling tea is
now famous the world over. Darjeeling tea is still being
produced by the orthodox method as opposed to the "Curling,
Tearing and Crushing" (CTC) method applied in the
plains. The most convenient garden to visit is the Happy
Tea Estate which is only 2 kilometers away from town
where one can witness tea plucking by women as well
as its processing in the factory.
